History
This idea of trying to use the local apples first arose
at a Transition Epsom meeting. I then mentioned it to Jon Sharpe,
the Borough Recycling Officer. He liked the idea and could see good
potential for waste reduction, so we decided to include the funding
for an apple crusher and an apple press in the funding request made
by PartnerCHIP to the Borough Environment Committee.
PartnerCHIP’s
main activities are in providing compost demonstrations and advice,
and also a shredder hire service, so this apple press project fits
in well with the existing activites. In the first instance. For
more information about PartnerCHIP, the website is here
Organisation. “Epsom
Apples” will be administered by PartnerCHIP rather than setting
up a separate organisation. We did some research, and found that
“Vigo” Apple Crushers and Presses are very sturdy and
have reasonable prices, so we applied for the funds for these. Slightly
to our surprise, the Environment Committee approved all of the funding,
and the crusher and press have now been delivered.
"Epsom
Apples" is administered in this way for convenience - if there
are more volunteers, we are very happy for it to become a seperate
organisation
Business Model.
We hope to recover some of our expenses .....
1. If someone brings
apples to us, we will press them and give them backsome of the juice
- about a fifth of the weight of the apples
2. Any remaining juice will be sold for 50p a cup
3. If we come to your premises and crush your apples you, we would
suggest a donation of £1 per litre, depending on how much
work you do and what we do.
Donations will
be shared between the Mayor's Charities and "Tools for Self
Reliance" and also used to defray expenses for equipment costs
(about £140)
